[ The morning before Zephir's first shift at the Hex Club, an envelope finds its way to his door. Inside is a gold pin in the shape of a hexagon, as well as a note: ]
Zephir, Welcome to the Hex Club. I look forward to working with you. — Silco
* For clarity's sake: The pin is merely a gift, not an expected part of your daily dress.
Even now, I nearly called you Al. I suppose that is a habit that will persist for some time.
I am writing to you on this day because I've an unsettling feeling regarding something I have done to myself; I have removed my eye in order to best the maze's golden curse. That in itself is not a problem I assume you can help with. No, what I feel the urge to ask your advice on is the eye itself. I've still got it.
Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
An eye. You sacrificed to the wrong statue, my love.
Normally you'd be wrong about that as well. The nature of this curse won't allow me to regrow what's been lost, however, but know this: it will be restored on its own. I can lessen the pain of the healing process, I simply can't accelerate it.
You don't want to get rid of your sacrifice, is that it?
[Wrapped lightly in waxed paper is a foccacia bouquet, delivered to Zephir's quarters closer to the 25th. Accompanying it is a smaller packet wrapped in a silk scarf, a small bracelet seemingly handmade by Theo himself; and full of a certain unspoken meaning with regard to its content. A note accompanies both, Theo's loopy wording reading:]
Zephir,
For your assistance and care this year, thank you. I'm not sure if or what mortal holidays you celebrate or enjoy, but I'm sure if anything, you can admire the changing of the years in some way.
[ How does she get into his room? Who knows? It's Peony. This is what she does.
One day, Zephir is left a few presents.
Inside a little vivarium, there is a weird little guy and a mini greenhouse with some late-blooming seedlings of unknown type inside. The final present is an enchanted necklace of an eye that seems to flicker with movement when unwatched.
Peony leaves a note on his pillow;]
Darling Zephir,
Yay! Nearly a new year to celebrate!!! I hope you like your new little friend. I didn't catch his name so you'll need to ask. Much love, Peony
[ what do you give someone capable of infinite creation? adam’s not one for human tradition, especially not any centered around false gods, but he thinks on it a while.
close to christmas, but not quite on the day, adam leaves a single vial filled with a black liquid, thick and familiar. the same he spilled over zephir’s wrist, when he was elbow deep behind adam’s ribs. with it, there’s a small piece of simple card stock. it reads, in neat handwriting:
For the plant, or whatever else you have use for. - Adam ]
